Last week, the final accommodation decision regarding the Spanish Bilingual Program was shared with the parents and students in Area IV. The letter, which can be viewed on our school website, details the schools where programs will be designated, as well as the 3 year transition plan. The following is a brief view of the program designations.
Last week, the final accommodation decision regarding the Spanish Bilingual Program was shared with the parents and students in Area IV. The letter, which can be viewed on our school website, details the schools where programs will be designated, as well as the 3 year transition plan. The following is a brief view of the program designations.
As detailed above, in September 2014, Bishop Pinkham will remain a Grade 5-9 school. We recognize that this decision will support the ability for both the French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual Programs to remain in Area IV and are also mindful that there will be an increased enrollment at our school. Presently, we have 642 students registered at our school. This was an increase from 500 students registered at Bishop Pinkham in 2012-2013. Next year, our projected enrollment will be 703 students. Below, is this year’s student enrollment information as well as next year’s projected student registration by program.
During March and April, we will be working as a staff to discuss how we will support the increased enrollment while continuing to maintain a rich learning environment for our students. We anticipate that we will need to look at our current configurations of classes and decide how we will provide a high-quality learning experience that supports our classroom availability and allows teachers to work effectively with students.
As a general guideline for a school budget, a classroom requires 25 students to fund a teacher. In a school with multiple programs, this becomes increasingly complex, as each program has limited flexibility to distribute these numbers evenly. Currently, out of a total of 25 classes, 12 have fewer than 25 students. The following is a breakdown of our current numbers in each class:
Based on the information above, we will also need to gather feedback from our community as to how we can best support manageable class sizes within our allocated school budget and limited classroom space. In order to discuss this openly, we encourage parents to attend the next School Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30pm.

From the School Council
We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone that contributed to the Direct Donation Campaign. To date the campaign has raised $10,195.00. In addition to the money raised through the campaign, the School Council has donated another $5652.00 for a total of $15,847.00 to purchase ergonomically sound tables and chairs and highly versatile furniture which are being used by our students in the Learning Commons. Another $4520.00 is still required to complete this project to purchase the remaining 35 chairs, turning the Learning Commons space into a comfortable and learning friendly environment for students.
The Learning Commons was determined, through teacher consultation, to be the highest priority item on a list of desired items, not paid for by the CBE but crucial to a healthy academic environment for our students.
The following list were the direct donation campaign items shared at the beginning of the year:

If you did not have an opportunity to contribute to the Direct Donation fund earlier in the year but would now like to support this initiative, Parent Council accepts donations throughout the year.
All payments are collected by the office and sent to the CBE where the funds are processed and the entire amount sent back to the Parent Council account to be used solely at Bishop Pinkham. Cheques need to be made out to The Calgary Board of Education and delivered to the Bishop Pinkham school office. The charitable number used by the CBE is 106830128RR0002. Please include this number on your cheque. Tax receipts will be issued for contributions.
Thank you for supporting our school.

Accountability Pillar
Thank you to all of our Grade 7 parents who were able to complete the Alberta Education Accountability Pillar. This survey provides great feedback about our school strengths, as well as provides us with information about how to improve our learning environment. All of our Grade 7 students and staff also completed this survey, and we anticipate seeing the results in May. If you have not yet had an opportunity to complete this survey, we encourage all of our Grade 7 parents to do so, and to mail your feedback to Alberta Education.
Parking and Student Drop-Offs
In the last month, we have received a number of concerns from the community about where students are being dropped off before and after school. Although parents are often limited by time when dropping students off at school, we are concerned that there have been some close calls reported that have occurred both in front of the school, as well as in the staff parking lot. If we could ask that the students do not cross the street in between the school busses and also that parents use the second exit in the staff parking lot (closest to the back of the school), we will be better able to ensure that there is clear visibility of students at all times. Ms J. Shantz and I will also support this by working with parents to clarify where safe drop-off destinations are located. Thank you so much for your support!
New Calendar
The 2014-2015 traditional and modified instructional calendars were approved by Superintendents on December 9, 2013. Tentative calendars for the 2015-16 to 2017-18 school years were also tentatively approved. These calendars are published on the CBE website under the Parent tab (PDF only).
Solar Panels
As reported in November, thanks to Skyfire Energy, 42 solar panels were installed on the roof of the school. As of last week, we are now beginning to harness the power of the sun and generate solar power. We are in the process of inviting the project engineers to work with our teachers to help understand how we can integrate this technology in our students’ daily learning. We have been provided a portal where we can view Bishop Pinkham’s direct solar contribution. The following is the site if you are interested in adding it to your bookmarks: SolarVu Energy Portal
Grade 7 Bridge Fest
On Thursday, January 23, Grade 7 students in all of our programs participated in our annual Bridge Fest. Students apply the principles they learn in science to the task of designing and building a bridge using a set materials list. The bridges are assessed by students and then subjected to a load test to measure which design is most effective. Students are very happy to discuss their designs and to explain how they feel their bridge will function to support a load. Thanks to M. J. Boivin for his continued leadership of this project and to the other Grade 7 teachers for their support of this very worthwhile experience.
Art 9 Gallery Tour

Open House
On Tuesday, February 25, we hosted our annual Bishop Pinkham Open House. Over the course of the evening, we had approximately 300 parents and students who joined us and participated in our various presentations and demonstrations of student learning. There were many opportunities to get to know our school; we would like to thank our Leadership students who answered questions and provided maps to parents, as well as the many students who provided examples of the great learning experiences that occur at Bishop Pinkham throughout the year. It was a wonderful evening and we were so proud of our community – it was a great way to welcome our incoming students and families!

On Friday, March 7, 30 of our Leadership students took a trip to the Mustard Seed Sorting Centre. Ms J. Tuttle and Ms K. Woodworth coordinated this opportunity to allow the Leadership students the chance to give back by working with the donations and food sorting at the Mustard Seed. Thanks also to the many parent volunteers who attended, there was a 5:1 ratio expectation from the Mustard Seed and this trip could not have been coordinated without the support of our parents.
This Week…

Parent-Teacher Interviews
Our final set of scheduled parent-teacher interviews will be held Friday, March 21 from 8:00 - 3:00. Again this year, these interviews are being held 'by invitation only.' This allows us to provide more time for interviews and to ensure that we are seeing the families we most need to see.
Parents will be invited by email or telephone later this week and early next week. Parents who have not received an invitation, but who feel it is important that they meet with particular teachers, are welcome to contact those teachers directly by telephone or email, to seek an invitation.
