October 1, 2013
Hello and welcome to the first day of October! Last Tuesday, we had a very well attended Parent Council meeting and welcomed many new parents to the group. For those of you who were not available to join us, we will be sure to post the September Meeting Minutes on our school website this week. During the meeting, we were asked to clarify how parents can receive notifications from teachers on D2L and how we can help our students improve their gym strip hygiene…a smelly affair. Just before we do this, we are also happy to mention that we will now be including a monthly feature on the update, that will be titled, ‘From the Parent Council…’
Notifications on D2L…
A frequent comment that we hear about D2L is that students and parents are not sure when teachers have updated their D2L shell. At our ‘Meet the Principal’ evening, a parent shared with us that each student could be sent notifications to their email or mobile device whenever a D2L shell has been updated. To follow these steps, all you will need to do is to update your preferences under the Notifications link located in the user drop-down menu. The following link will take you through the steps to complete this: D2L Notification Update.

Gym Strip Hygiene 101…
It has come to our attention that both our boys and girls change rooms have become particularly foul smelling. Although our Phys. Ed teachers remind students each Friday to take their clothes home to wash, it seems that some students are forgetting to follow-through. If we could ask parents to also reinforce this at home and to consider using odor-eliminators for shoes, such as baking soda, that would be much appreciated. As well, now that the cooler air has arrived, it is important that students are appropriately dressed for Phys. Ed. An extra pair of sweat pants or a sweater can go a long way when students are outdoors.
Limitless Inspiration…
As an artistically challenged adult, the following film reminded me about the magic that occurs when our students become excited and inspired about their learning. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if all of us were as passionate as this 5 year old is about her craft? The film highlights the abstract child painter, Aelta Andre, at work in her studio.
